A narrative game is a game where story is not just decoration.

It is not only a cutscene before the action begins.
It is not only dialogue between levels.
It is not only a written plot placed on top of gameplay.

In a narrative game, story, character, atmosphere, world design, player experience, and gameplay work together to create meaning.

Coming-of-age stories often begin with fear.

Not because fear is the whole story.
Not because growing up is only painful.
Not because childhood must be shown as dark.

But because fear is often the first moment when a child understands that the world is larger, stranger, and less safe than they believed.

Monsters are rarely only monsters.

In the simplest stories, a monster may be a threat: something dangerous, strange, or frightening that the hero must defeat. But in deeper stories, monsters often carry meaning.

A monster can be fear.
A monster can be shame.
A monster can be anger.
A monster can be hunger.
A monster can be guilt.
A monster can be a memory that refuses to stay buried.

That is why monsters are often metaphors.

They give shape to something invisible.

An inner monster is not always a literal creature.

In stories, an inner monster usually means a hidden fear, wound, shame, memory, anger, or emotional conflict that has been given symbolic shape.

It can appear as a creature.
It can appear as a voice.
It can appear as a shadow.
It can appear as a place the character cannot escape.
It can appear as a force inside the character that they do not fully understand.

An inner monster is powerful because it makes something invisible visible.

It has darkness, but it is not built to scare you.
It has monsters, but they are not there only to frighten you.
It has pain, but pain is not the point.

A dark fairy tale is not simply a story with monsters.

It is not dark because there is a forest.
It is not dark because someone gets lost.
It is not dark because a creature waits in the shadows.
